Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery (MFDS)

The diploma of Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery (MFDS) has now replaced the old style fellowship as the requirement for entry to specialist training programmes..

The examination will consist of three parts, the first of which (Part A) contains a multiple choice question paper and two multiple short answer question papers. The second part of the examination (Part B) contains a multiple choice question paper and a multiple short answer question paper, and a third section (Part C) consists of a clinical examination and two oral examinations. Candidates may enter for Parts B and C 20 months after graduation.

MFDS Part A examination

Part A

 covers Sections 1-6 of the syllabus
 consists of 3 sub-sections
 must be passed before progressing to Part B
 pass/fail grade will be awarded for the whole of Part A
 cross-compensation between the 3 sub-sections is possible

Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ)

 2 hour paper of 60 questions

- all questions of same format
- single initial statement
- 5 possible responses
- any response may be correct or incorrect
- marks not deducted for wrong answer

 covers Section 1-6 of syllabus

Multiple Short Questions (MSA)

1 1/2 hour paper of 15 questions

each question has similar format

- concentrates on particular area of syllabus
- asks series of related questions to test application of knowledge and understanding
- all parts require short precise written answers (usually a few words)
- no extra marks for overflowing allocated space on paper!
- number of marks allocated to each part of question will be displayed
- each MSA will have same number of marks overall

 Will concentrate on Sections 1,2,4,5 and 6 of syllabus

MFDS Part B & PART C

Part B

 covers the whole of the syllabus
 consists of 2 sub-sections
must be passed before progressing to Part C
pass/fail grade will be awarded for the whole of Part B

 

Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ)

2 1/2 hour paper of 75 questions

all questions of same format as Part A

emphasis on Section 7-11 of syllabus, although there will be some questions on the rest

Marks will not be deducted for wrong answers

Multiple Short Questions

1 1/2 hour paper of 15 questions

each question will indicate the area of knowledge being tested

all sections of the syllabus will be covered

Part C

is Collegiate, ie each college will design its own examination
consists of 2 sub-sections

Clinical Examination

                                                             with two patients

45 min
-- one session of 20 min
-- one session of 25 min
 

Two Oral Examinations

each to last 15 minutes

questions on any part of the syllabus

may include both basic science and clinical subjects
